While one child we feature has, tragically,
lost both parents in the disaster, our focus is not
just on the orphaned children. Many children survived
the disaster with one or both their parents -- but had
their normal lives, education and recreation shattered.
We give more prominence to the children for story telling
purposes, but our interest is in the entire family unit
-- everyone who has survived, including grandparents
and close relatives, who in normal times would have
been part of the extended family in the Asian context.
We will also explore how family dynamics have been radically
altered by the disaster, e.g. with elder siblings having
to become bread-winners, or grandparents having to take
care of grandchildren.
